77% of Corn in Mato Grosso Will be Planted Within Ideal Window

The Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) predicts that 77% of the safrinha corn in the state will be planted within the ideal window compared to the average of 85%. The ideal window generally closes about the third week of February. The latest farmers would consider planting corn in Mato Grosso would be March 10-15. If planting proceeded after this period, farmers would likely switch to an alternative crop such as grain sorghum, sunflowers, or sesame.

The eventual safrinha corn yield depends on when the summer rainy season ends. Normally, the last significant rains in Mato Grosso occur sometime in early May, after which is the start of the dry season. Last year was very unusual in that the rain continued until early July, resulting in record corn yields in the state. A worst case scenario for safrinha corn yields would be if the rain ended in late March. Metrologists in Brazil have not yet made any predictions about when the summer rains may end.
